Openness vs social interaction

Openness. Flexibility. Convenience.

These all sound like great words and things to strive for in online learning.

The ability to learn anywhere, anytime, whenever it suits.
The option to start a course at any time and work through it at your own pace.

But how does openness work alongside social interaction within an online course?

Can learning be so open that anyone can start or finish at any time and include aspects of social interaction, collaboration and group work?

This is what I’m pondering at the moment.

Can these things work together effectively or is it one or the other?
